Colombia's President Warns 'I Shall Resort to Weapons Again' if United States Invades.

The US President along with Colombia's president have turned up the tone in their verbal conflict, increasing strains bilaterally after American military units attacked Venezuela with the aim of deposing the leader of Venezuela Nicolás Maduro from power.

"He operates narcotics facilities and cocaine factories and that won't last much longer," the US president stated.

Rising Rhetoric and Claims

Speaking to reporters over the weekend, the American leader threatened comparable armed intervention against Bogotá, stating Colombia faces serious problems and led by an unwell individual who enjoys creating the drug and distributing it to America."

While Colombia remains the world’s largest producer of cocaine, no proof exists that President Gustavo Petro, who was elected in 2022, is personally involved in the trade.

A Deteriorating Relationship

The country has long been a close partner of the United States in the fight against drug trafficking and benefited from bipartisan support from American politicians, but relations have soured significantly since Trump assumed the presidency.

Colombia’s drug trade is mainly overseen by criminal organizations including the Golf Clan, the National Liberation Army (ELN) and breakaway groups of the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (Farc), the majority of whose members laid down arms following a 2016 peace deal.

Petro's Defiant Rebuttal

Upon being questioned if a military operation like that in Venezuela was a possibility regarding Colombia, Trump responded: "That seems like a good idea from my perspective."

Petro, once a member of a left-wing insurgent group who demobilised in the 1990s, categorically refuted these allegations. "I am neither illegitimate nor am I a drug trafficker," he declared.

"The US president speaks without information. Cease defaming me," he wrote in a message.

"If they [the US] bomb civilians, they will turn into a multitude of fighters across the countryside. And if they detain me, which a large part of the population loves and respects, they will release the ‘jaguar’ of the people," he admonished.

From Fighter to Statesman

Petro spent some years as a young man belonging of the leftist M-19 guerrilla group but is not believed to have ever engaged in fighting. After demobilizing, he was involved in creating a new constitution over three decades ago and later became an influential politician. He served as mayor of the Colombian capital before being elected president.

"I pledged to never again hold a gun ... but for the homeland I shall resume arms again," he said.

Reinforced Protection along with Broad Condemnation

Minister Pedro Sánchez stated that the president’s security detail had received additional support.

A segment of Colombia’s political right have expressed support with Trump's stance, yet figures from all sides of Colombian politics have condemned the notion of a US attack targeting Colombia.

Diplomatic and Financial Pressure

American authorities withdrew Petro’s visa subsequent to he urged US troops to ignore orders that violate law. Later, in October, authorities imposed financial sanctions targeting Petro, his wife and a number of key allies.

Concurrently as the US increased its military presence in the Caribbean and targeting vessels thought to carry drugs to pressure Venezuela’s Maduro, US forces have also conducted strikes on maritime targets in the eastern Pacific region adjacent to Colombia.
