Entire Career of Salary Not Enough for UK Workers to Become Part of Richest 10%, Study Reveals

According to new research, the typical earner in the UK would need over five decades of income to reach the wealth level of the wealthiest 10% of the population.

Growing Economic Disparity Over Time

This research analyzed financial assets statistics including the 2020-22 timeframe and determined that during 2006-08, it would have required 38 years' worth of median full-time earnings to join the top 10th of the financial hierarchy.

An economic expert part of the report stated: "Wealth gaps in Britain are now so large that a typical full-time employee saving all their earnings throughout their career would remain unable to reach the top of the economic scale."

Assessing the Economic Gap

The study found that the disparity between the assets of the average person and someone in the top 10% was one million pounds in the pre-crisis period, but had expanded to 1.3 million pounds in real terms by recent times.

The analyst further stated: "These disparities are particularly worrying as wealth mobility in Britain is restricted – people that start life well-off tend to stay wealthy, and conversely applies."

Proportional Economic Disparity

Even with the wealth gap widening in specific figures, the portion of complete net worth in the UK held by the most affluent homes – called "relative wealth inequality" – has been "broadly stable since the 1980s," per the study.

During this period, total wealth in the UK increased dramatically from thrice the yearly economic output, to almost 7.5 times.

Factors of Wealth Inequality

So-called "passive" appreciation, through growing real estate costs and variations in pension valuations, were the primary factors of the growing financial disparity over the past decade, according to the analysis.

These appreciations tended to accrue to older, property-owning households, the study demonstrates – intensifying the generational financial disparity.

Intergenerational Economic Gaps

The median economic difference between individuals aged 30-34 and people aged 60-64 more than doubled in real terms, from 135 thousand pounds in the mid-2000s, to 310 thousand pounds.

Area-Based Disparities

Additionally, there were significant area-based disparities, with the typical amount of wealth in 2020-22 reaching 290 thousand pounds in south-east England, where property prices have tended to rise rapidly, as opposed to 110 thousand pounds in the northeastern region.

Health Crisis Years Consequences

During the pandemic, when numerous employees were covered under the government-supported job retention program, and Covid shutdowns reduced expenditure possibilities, the information reveals countless homes were capable of accumulating, growing their net worth.

More affluent homes achieved superior outcomes, though. "The typical family in the lowest-income quintile saw their available funds increase by just £80 over the pandemic period (from 2019 to 2022), broadly the same as the 24 months before COVID. On the other hand, the median home in the highest income quintile saw their liquid savings rise by £4,200," the analysis concludes.
